Is technology stressing us out? that seems to be the issue. How much technology is too much technology? With so much going on in our lives with emails, social media, work and friends what are we to do? We get overwhelmed and we break down, we have panic attacks and have social insecurities. Here you will read a little about how technology has caused stress and anxiety and effected our youth and our older generation. You will also read how technology is helping reduce stress and anxiety in our lives.
Too much for the youth to handle!?
According to an article by www.independent.co.uk written by RelaxNews. A study done at the University of Cambridge in the UK, estimated that out of 1,300 participants one third of the participants felt stress and anxiety throughout their day. Too much technology can lead to a lifestyle with over usage of electronics and therefor cause stress, anxiety, social disorders and just an overall dissatisfaction with their life. What’s even more upsetting are the reports of the younger generation feeling the effects of too much technology and its leading them to stress and anxiety. Children as young as 10 to 18 had a feeling of being overwhelmed.
Too much Facebook or other social media platforms along with gaming has contributed to this problem. Social media sites and gaming which allow the players to talk to each other with no monitor is allowing children to attack one another. I know a lot of parents out there mostly the men would say ” oh its good it makes them stronger! “. I would like to say NO!! its not good at all, it lowers the childs self-esteem and can belittle or completely destroy their childhood. This can all lead to depression and even the possibility of suicide. Please, parents monitor what your child is reading and listening to as well as who their friends are online. https://www.angelsense.com/ this is great if you want to keep track through a GPS on their phones, you can do so much with their app. I think if you want to keep track of your childs home use of the internet then you can look through the history, but keep in mind everyone deserves privacy. We want to keep our children safe, not feeling like were always watching,” even if we kind of are “.
How tech has stressed us out, and anxiety that follows
Many threats of anxiety is due to too much technology. So much going on in our lives, things like our friends on social media, work, relationships, school. Everything can pile up and create many types of anxiety like social anxiety. This type of anxiety will separate the individual from his or her friends and family. This type of behavior can lead the individual from wanting to go to school.
When an individual is overwhelmed or becomes addicted to gaming or online gambling, this person could be experiencing a separation from reality or even feel withdraw from their internet if cut off. All of this piles up and becomes stress and anxiety. It weights heavy on a child or young adult, even our older generation is experiencing stress and anxiety over technology. It makes them feel out of place and I have a few simple ways on how to ease the stress of this day and age on our elderly.
Technology and the Elderly,3 simple ways to help ease anxiety
Many of the older generation’s which are set in their way usually find it difficult to deal with the non-stop change that new technology is bringing into the here and now. Here are a few ways to help the elderly use the internet in a more friendly approach.
3 simple ways to help seniors with modern Tech.
- Basic size and adjustments to the font would help to read the content better. I think if you can’t see it you can’t use it, right? Through the help of basic settings the size and behavior of content and programs on devices can be altered. Older people unfortunately do not know where to find these settings.
- Touch screens are making it better, once taught how to use properly it becomes better to understand. Touch screens are more intuitive than a mouse and its size makes it more portable and convenient. There are issues with people that have unseady hands, but there is software integrated in some tablets that can pick up on it and correct the issue.
- Taking time to explain how to properly use the computer, internet, social media, etc. I think if you really take your time to explain these things to them it helps. Learning how to use the computer can be like learning a new language. In some cases it is.
Technology causes stress, but it can help too.
Technology can help reduce stress by producing feedback on your body, using different apps and wearables. There are apps that offer guided imagery, deep breathing, self-hypnosis, and sound and sleep therapy. All of this in which are at our finger tips. Now get a little deeper here is something to help with chaotic mass emails, Neema Moraveji, the Director of the Stanford Calming Technology Lab is working on designing a calming email reader that delivers and organizes your messages. Relax and keep calm, Tech is here to help
With many things technology can get overwhelming and out of control if we allow it too. There are certain Technological advances that now allow us to do things we have only dreamed about in the 70s. We now have the ability to record our sleep and monitor our heart rate all in the comfort of home. You can now track our blood pressure and calories for weight loss. You can wear a FitBit and use apps, there are home robots to help with security, turning on the lights, ordering your groceries, reminders and much more.
We live in a chaotic world with so much on our plates, we can sometime’s lose focus on ourselves. Years ago we would write numbers and notes down on paper with a pen, nowadays we store our contacts in our phone and forget about it. If we need note’s we record on our phones or everything is sent in an email or text, IM, private messages, photo or tweet. I remember when pagers came out and it was a big deal. People were already creating a language of their own back then, a way to communicate that paved the road for texting. At the end of the day, what i’m trying to say is that technology is continuing to progress and evolve along with the human race. We as the users of this technology that we created will see more integrated tech in our future. We will become more comfortable with multi-tasking our instant messages and emails and tweets. People are going to see with Artificial Intelligence and it’s help we will be able to become more organized. Tell me what you think about that? Do you think Technology will help reduce stress and anxiety or do you think it will be the path to our own destruction?
